FAQ

Everyone has questions and I've tried to answer many of the common ones on this page. However, if you have a specific question about a wedding photoshoot then please visit this page.

Do you do photoshoots anywhere?

I live in Oxford and do a lot of shoots in London, the Cotswolds, Birmingham, Bristol and surrounding areas but I am happy to travel to wherever you live! I don’t charge for travel up to 100 miles from Oxford but for locations further away, I charge 45 pence per mile (after the 100 miles).

How do we pick a location for the shoot?

I will always try and photograph you only in your favourite spot, whether that be a National Trust site, a woods, a local park or just in your back garden! However, if you can’t think of a location then I do have a portfolio of places that are beautiful. With family shoots, I also normally start with some shots at home and then we drive (or walk) to another location.

What should we wear?

You can wear pretty much what you want but I tend to ask that you avoid loud party shirts, clashing colours and busy patterns and anything that might distract from the actual photo. For family shoots, you don’t need to match but I do ask that your children dress fairly smart for the initial photos at home but can then change into other clothes.

What time do you do the shoot?

Ideally, my sessions start around 8am or 9am or about two hours before dusk due to the light being lovely and soft and golden but we can do the photoshoot at any hour. In the summer months, I am happy to start a photoshoot as early as you want and will continue into the evening if that is a possibility. If the weather causes a postponement (only rain causes this!), then I suggest a new date as soon as possible to the original date.

Do we need to meet before the shoot?

No we don’t although it’s helpful to have a quick phone chat to chat through everything, assuage any fears and explain what a shoot actually entails. I also draw up a rough photo list of some of the shots that you may want, if required and do send you a job sheet to fill in.

How do we pay you?

For all jobs other than weddings, I normally ask for 100 per cent of the agreed price paid upfront by BAC.

How do you supply the photos?

I supply both the high-res (suitable for making prints) and low-res photos (ideal for social media or email) via www.wetransfer.com which is a easy, low-maintenance cloud-based computer file transfer service. You don’t need to register and you get the photos within a few hours once I have uploaded and sent them. For a small fee, you can also receive the photos in the post via registered mail on a USB stick. I am also happy to create an unique online album of your photos (via www.pixieset.com), password protected, if you wish to show your family or friends the photos.

How many photos do we get?

Unlike a lot of family and portrait photographers it seems who charge a standard shooting fee and then make their money from prints, I supply to you all the images electronically that I am happy with, both high-res and low-res, via we transfer. This is normally more than 100 images (and sometimes much more) depending on how long the shoot lasted for. I don’t supply prints but you do get access to every image to make your own prints with and I also have a list of suppliers of excellent photo printers who I can recommend if you would like.

Do we retain copyright of the images?

As photographer, I retain the copyright, but I give you the licence (as stated in a simple client contract) to use the photos as you wish for personal use including making prints. You may use also them on social media if the images are credited with a simple copyright line. I also ask that I am able to use some on social media and my website but this is wholly dependent on your explicit permission.

How long do you keep our photographs for?

I keep a copy of all the edited photographs from the shoot on an external digital archive system, so if anything happens to your photos whether you have lost them or they have been destroyed, I can supply another copy for you (for a very small fee).
